6 reasons to run

I’ve written before about some of the good reasons to run, like preventing middle-aged spread, protecting your eyes and reducing the risk of diabetes. Now Women’s Health has compiled its own list of reasons to start running.

1) Running is easy.

You don’t need much equipment, and you already know how to do it, even if your form isn’t yet perfect.

2)   Running is hard.

Running works your heart and burns more calories than stair-climbers, bikes and cross-country skiing machines. When you’re done, you’ll feel like you accomplished something.

3)   Running is good for your joints.

Contrary to popular belief, running can actually improve joint health. And runners are typically at lower risk of osteoarthritis because they generally aren’t obese—a major risk factor for osteoarthritis. Running also strengthens cartilage, ligaments and bones.

4)   Running relieves stress.

Running has been shown to reduce anxiety and is recommended for people suffering from depression and addiction. It’s more than the much-touted “runner’s high” (which is for real)—it’s also a great way to clear your mind and thought processes, or even just distract yourself.

5) Running can prevent disease.

Running reduces the risks of heart disease, stroke and diabetes. It can lower blood pressure, raise good cholesterol and boost your immunity to viruses.

6)   Running can extend your life.

Running seems to slow the aging process. A study out of Stanford found that runners in their 70s have fewer disabilities and longer spans of active life than non-runners. They also are half as likely to die early deaths. Running not only delayed cardiovascular deaths but also was associated with fewer early deaths from cancer, neurological disease, infections and other causes.
